On the road with the RTA's Education team

The Residential Tenancies Authority’s (RTA) Education team has been on the road delivering free events to Queensland’s renting community. These sessions help property managers/owners and tenants understand their rights and responsibilities. Below, we recap the Education team’s events over the last 2 months, and share how you can get involved in upcoming events in Far North Queensland this October.

Presenting to students with the University of Queensland Union

The University of Queensland (UQ) Union representatives invited the RTA to speak with UQ students about their rights and responsibilities when renting in Queensland.

It was an opportunity for the RTA to discuss share housing, rooming accommodation and general tenancies. The Education team spoke to students who shared their unique experiences and asked the team about their own situations.

Lynn Smith, Senior Advisor Education and Engagement, said, ‘It was fantastic to see students taking an active role in tenancy law, learning their rights and obligations, and setting themselves up for successful tenancies throughout their lives.’

Nine days at the Ekka

The Education team hosted a stall at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) from 9 to 17 August 2025. The team answered lots of questions and had face-to-face conversations with people who stopped to have a chat. This included a mix of tenants, residents, property owners and managers, as well as other community members.

With Queenslanders from across the state converging at the Ekka, it proved a valuable opportunity for the RTA to further connect with the community, raising awareness about RTA’s services and providing tenancy information to a diverse range of people.

The RTA’s competition to win a BBQ and grill set was a highlight of the Ekka event. To enter, eligible customers were asked to subscribe to RTA News. The BBQ and grill set went to Calleb, who rents with his partner in Kelvin Grove. Calleb and his partner were thrilled with the prize and were excited to have a few friends over for their first BBQ.

Student advocacy and support at UQ Community Day

The UQ Union invited the RTA to attend its Student Advocacy and Support Community Day event at the St Lucia campus on 27 August 2025. Throughout the day, the team spoke to international and domestic students. The team heard about student experiences, raised awareness about the RTA’s services and answered direct questions about tenancies and rental bonds.

Visiting Longreach

The Education team delivered information sessions in Longreach on 2 September and in Emerald on 4 September. These sessions focused on recent rental law changes, 1 September regulation changes and general tenancy topics.

The team engaged with attendees and answered questions from property managers and owners on various issues, including maintenance, break lease and rent payments. After the session ended, the team spent time speaking with attendees to ensure everyone had an opportunity to ask questions while they were in town.

At the Longreach event, Lynn Smith and the Education team met people who had travelled from Blackall and other nearby towns. Ms Smith said, ‘Community members, property managers and local council representatives travelled for hours to attend. It shows there’s strong interest in knowing and understanding tenancy laws in every part of Queensland.’

Visiting Emerald

The team also met with local stakeholders during the visit, including Longreach Region Queensland Health Coordinators for employee housing and Central highlands Community Services in Emerald.

These meetings provide insights into local, on-the-ground challenges in regional Queensland. The Education team is grateful to the organisations for making the time to meet and share their experiences.
