Information for tenants, lessors (landlords), agents and managers

Student accommodation

The same laws apply to students as anyone else renting a place to live in Queensland.

General tenancies

If a student, or number of students rent a house, unit or townhouse and have signed a general tenancy agreement (form 18a), this is called a general tenancy. Visit the information for tenants section for information about the rules which apply for general tenancies.

Rooming accommodation

If a student rents a room in a boarding house, off-campus student accommodation or other type of rooming accommodation and has signed a rooming accommodation agreement (form r18), the information for residents living in rooming accommodation will apply.

On-campus rooming accommodation

For students living in a room on-campus, only the rules about bond lodgement apply. The other renting laws do not apply.

For more information about which rules apply, contact the RTA on 1300 366 311. Some useful links which may assist students are also available.
